Mermaid Parade

This was my first Mermaid Parade, and I can’t imagine ever missing it again. From the moment I stepped off the N train in Coney Island, I felt how special the day was going to be. It was the most beautiful celebration of joy and community I’ve ever witnessed. I was brought to (happy) tears more than once throughout the day, completely swept up in the magic of what I was seeing and feeling. I’m not exaggerating when I say that every person I met radiated warmth, joy, and a welcoming spirit. I left the parade feeling lighter than I had in a long time, with a newfound love for mermaids, sea creatures, and the community that makes this day so remarkable.

Below are some quotes from attendees.

“We’ve been coming every summer for the last 8 or 9 years. He does my glitter in the parking lot”

(about her husband, Peter) - Marilyn

“Jamie, Jamie the jellyfish”

  - Jamie the Jellyfish (in response to me asking for their name)

“Usually I’m more sparkly than this. But I wanted to be here to encourage people to shine. I give out stickers during Pride month. Want one?”

  -Nick

“I love the costumes, the creativity, and meeting all the awesome people who come”

 - Mike
