Siena Liggins latest single ‘FKN SWEET’ is the self-love anthem we all need
Pop, R&B, and hip-hop star Siena Liggins is carving her own lane in queer music. Her latest song, 'FKN SWEET,' is the self-love anthem we all need right now—in a time when it can be hard to find joy, and when many people are afraid to be authentic, this song urges listeners to be unapologetically themselves.
Where it all began
Liggins was always destined to be a writer. Her parents always thought she'd be a politician, a journalist, or some other type of writer.
However, at just 11 years old, she found her calling. Her uncle had a basement studio at her grandma's house, and one day Liggins snuck downstairs and begged to be on a track. Her uncle made a deal—if she could write something by the time her grandma was back, he would let her record it. And so began Liggins' journey into the world of music. She did record the song and put it on MySpace. At the time, she had recently changed schools and "the next day at school I was like an instant celebrity," she explained. Suddenly, she was in charge of party playlists, and people asked her for her thoughts on music and culture. It was like a whole new world suddenly opened up for her.
Growing into her musical identity
Years after her foray into music via MySpace, Liggins released her first single, 'Flowerbomb,' in 2018. This sex-positive anthem is an ode to lesbian love, and it helped launch Liggins' career, in which she is carving a space in music that is solely her own with a unique style of queer pop and R&B.
Throughout Liggins' career, she's defined a clear creative vision, with intentionality in everything she does. In fact, she's been involved in every step of the creative process from writing to composing, producing, mixing, and mastering.
"In general, independent artists are chameleons; we have to wear all the hats and be a jack of all trades," Liggins said.
For Liggins, her music is about observing; it's a way to share her thoughts and feelings about what it means to be human.
"If you listen to my music start to finish from my first song on, the ongoing theme is the greatest protest, the greatest act of resistance is going to be that authenticity," explained Liggins.
FKN Sweet
Liggin's latest single, 'FCKN SWEET,' began in a deeply personal space. "I just want to make something that is affirming for myself," Liggins said.
When she first began work on the song, she felt like she had a lot to prove, and the writing itself was a grounding session. However, as the song developed through various iterations, it grew a life of its own.
The catchy, danceable single embodies one of Liggins' beliefs: "Joy begets joy." As Liggins explained, we're in a time when many people are afraid to be themselves, and this song aims to inspire people to love themselves and each other.
It all comes full circle
Since her humble beginnings in her grandmother's basement, Liggins career has been taken to exciting new heights. Last year, she opened for the Canadian queer pop artist, XANA.
For Liggins, the best part of performing is the people — the people who know the words, the people who are seeking moments of connectedness and escape from their lives.
"I get the chance to have someone escape for 30 minutes and not think about anything but the moment that they're in," she explained.
Growing up, Liggins parents knew she'd be a writer, and they always told her that she could accomplish anything she put her mind to. So it seems only fitting that they both have attended shows—her mom singing and screaming the lyrics, and her dad trying to stand out of view but loosening up and having fun by the end of the show.
With touring last year and the recent release of 'FCKN SWEET,' Liggins career is on the rise, and she promises new exciting songs in 2026.
One thing is certain: Liggins will continue to create her own lane, her own style, and push the limits of what queer music can be.
"Pushing on the boundaries is the way you let more people in the room," voiced Liggins.
