We Learned to Breathe in the Dark

They told us

lower your voice

like thunder could be trained

into a whisper

Told us

fix your walk

soften your hands

straighten your story

until it passed inspection

by people who never had to explain

their existence

They told us

this is not for you

And still

still

we came anyway

Carrying closets

like coffins on our backs

burying pieces of ourselves

just to survive the daylight

Learning how to breathe

in rooms that felt like drowning

Learning how to laugh

with grief tucked neatly

behind our teeth

Because some of us

let’s tell the truth

some of us did not think

we would make it this far

Not past the slurs

that stuck to our skin

like ash

Not past the prayers

that tried to exorcise

our joy

Not past the silence

of people we loved

who chose comfort

over us

And yet

here you are

Heartbeat loud as revolution

Pulse saying stay

when everything else said run

Do you understand

what that means

It means you are not just living

you are defying

You are a contradiction

to every closed door

every clenched fist

every sermon that tried

to shrink God

small enough

to exclude you

You are still here

And not just here

becoming

Becoming louder

than the fear that raised you

Becoming brighter

than the darkness that named you

Becoming whole

in a world that tried

to hand you fragments

This is not borrowed strength

This is forged

in late night prayers

that sounded more like questions

in mirrors that took years

to recognize your own reflection

in chosen families

that said

you belong here

and meant it

We are not standing

on the shoulders of giants

We are the ones

who rose

without being lifted

We are the ones

who turned survival

into something sacred

We are the ones

who took no

and made it echo

until it sounded like watch me

So listen

this moment is not gentle

It is not soft hands

and quiet victories

It is fire

It is breath pulled sharp

through clenched teeth

It is the holy furious knowing

that you were never a mistake

And if they still do not see it

If they still try

to legislate your existence

debate your dignity

erase your name

like it was written

in something temporary

then let them hear you now

We are not temporary

We are not passing through

We are not a question

waiting for approval

We are the answer

that refused to die

So rise

not politely

not quietly

not in a way

that makes anyone else comfortable

Rise like truth

that cannot be buried

Rise like joy

that refuses to be tamed

Rise like every version of yourself

that was told

not to exist

finally stepping forward

and saying

I am here

I have always been here

And I am not going anywhere

And for the one

still sitting in the dark

still wondering

if there is a place

for them in this world

be the light

that does not flicker

be the proof

that survival

can become song

be the reason

they choose

to stay

Because we did not come this far

to almost live

We came to take up space

to remake the world

to become

so undeniably ourselves

that even the dark

has to learn

our names.
